TAFTA Agreement

Thailand and Australia have entered into a new commercial era with the 1st January, 2005 implementation of the signed TAFTA. Exporters of Australian goods to Thailand and Thai goods to Australia will need to gain a TAFTA Exporters Registration Reference Number to cover their general portfolio of goods traded and there will be a need for a Certificate of Origin for each shipment in order to gain the benefits of the tariff reductions under the TAFTA. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website (www.dfat.gov.au/geo/thailand) contains useful information and the Australian Customs site (www.customs.gov.au) possesses more detailed information of value to Customs Agents and Freight Forwarders. TAFTA Certificates of Origin are obtainable from the network of Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry members (www.acci.asn.au refer to "Trade Inquiries") and the Australian Industry Group (www.aigroup.asn.au).

As there will be an ongoing review process of the TAFTA, the ATBC would be interested in your axes and bouquet experiences of the implementation of the Agreement in order that the benefits of the TAFTA's regulatory and transparency measures will be realised by all engaged in the bilateral commerce.
